Linksys NAS200 Frequently Asked Questions

Can we create or enable an access via HTTP and FTP w/o any authentication?
In HTTP it is not possible. In FTP and SMB, if guest login is allowed, any NAS user can access the public disks available.

Since NAS200 supports authentication, is it possible to integrate it with any type of database like active directory or LDAP?
No. There is no option or workaround for this.

What protocol is use for remote connections to the NAS file share?
SMB, CIFS (I have tried this on Linux), FTP, Samba.

How many data backup jobs can be configured on the Network Storage System?
The Network Storage System supports a maximum of ten backup jobs.

How many data backup jobs can be executed simultaneously?
A maximum of three backup jobs can be executed simultaneously. If additional data backup jobs are triggered, then they will be queued in the buffer and executed automatically after the Network Storage System finishes the initial three backup jobs.

Can the data backup function support usage of the Double Byte Character Set (DBCS)?
Yes, the data backup function supports DBCS; however, both the target and source devices, such as computers, should be set to the same language. The Network Storage System does not support some special DBCS characters, so if any filename includes those special characters, then the backup may fail for such a file, or the filename will inadvertently change.

My third-party backup software takes a long time to back up files. How can I speed it up?
In most cases there is no way to speed up the data backup; you will have to wait for it to finish. Most backup software applications check and/or compress files before copying them over, so data backup takes longer than copying files.

The hard drives and fan are supposed to be in standby mode. Why are they active?
During standby mode, the hard drives and fan may activate for a capacity check or other network activity. When there is no more activity, the hard drives will return to standby mode, and then the fan will stop.

Arul,

Check out this link for the list http://seoroot.com/blog/linux-filesystems/how-to-access-and-explore-linux-file-systems-on-windows-os.html

You can also try to use Explore2fs, you can download it from the link below.

http://www.chrysocome.net/downloads/explore2fs-1.08beta9.zip

Should make you able to explore ext2,ext3 and reiserfs filesystems.

I have 2 questions.

1. Can we use Hard drive by connecting it with PC to take backu p of data; which was previoused installed in NAS200. I want to access data which are in hdd.

2. Presently we have RAID 1 in NAS200 with 2 nos. 1TB Hard Disk Drive. If i disconnect them and install previously cofigured hard disk drive with it; can we use it? And will this effect to currently configured RAID1 if I reconnect those both 1TB HDD Again?

Does someone have problems transfering large amount of data to the NAS200 from the computer hard disk? I have to send 17GB of data but seems to delay something like 48hrs to complete the transfer. Thanks.

I use Ubuntu 10.4 and Samba, I tried to log in NAS200 without success. A blank screen is only what I get. Under Windows it’s OK. I use the same user and password on UBUNTU, SAMBA, NAS200 and XP. When running Ubuntu I can see all (Windows) computers from may workgroup and share files and printers. NAS200 seems to be the only problems. Is the any special configuration in SAMBA? Thanks.

I had a linksys NAS200 but it is broke now, so I want to take the hard drives and read the data off of it. If I put the hard drive into an external USB hard drive case, I can’t read it. My PC detects it as a USB drive but I can’t open up anything. How can I retrive my data without having to purchage another NAS200?

David @ 3:09 pm:

The NAS200 uses a Linux file system. You should be able to either attach or install the drives to another Linux system and read them. If the disks were in RAID1, Linux may report that the file system type is unknown. In that case, use the command “mdadm -A” to build a RAID from the provided disk or disks. Google “man mdadm” for more info about this command. If unsure, I would just use one of the disks from a RAID 1. That way if anything goes wrong, you still have a copy of your data. hth

its normal you can transfer data to nas200 max 4-5 megabyte per second

I have a problem with my Linksys NAS.

I installed two 500Gb disks. The NAS detected both disks…..I start to copy files on one disk1 and then on disk2….there was no problem at all.

I shutdown the NAS and then turn it on again and the Disk 1 is not accesible….then I turn off and on again the NAS and the Disk 1 was on line again.

I continued copying files and they were saved correctly.

I had to turn off the NAS again and when turned on…again the disk 1 is not detected.

What is going on?

Regards
