If you are one of the many users of Thunderbird migrating from Windows XP to Windows 7 the easy way. This guide will help you backup and restore your emails in Thunderbird including all the settings.

Backup your Thunderbird folder and store it in a different partition or drive. Thunderbird folder can be found in C:\Documents and Settings\[Username]\Application Data
Restoring Thunderbird on Windows 7
Install the latest version on Thunderbird mail client which is version 3.0. Once Thunderbird is already installed, do not run it yet when prompted if you want to run it for the first time. Now, copy the backup Thunderbird folder into this path C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming and when it’s done copying the folder, run the Thunderbird mail client.
If you are restoring from 2.0 or lower version of Thunderbird, you will be prompted if you want to migrate. Proceed with the migration and when it’s done, you will have all your emails restored just like before the upgrade.

This simply does not work. It seems to work for settings, but folder structure besides the Local Folders does not transfer.
